What is the difference between life coaching and counselling and psychotherapy?
While they certainly can be described as similar disciplines with definite parallels, there are also differences to be observed when comparing life coaching to traditional counselling and psychotherapy. Differences can be observed in both in the methodologies used and what tends to be focused on during a typical session. It must be noted, however, that sometimes these "differences" are not so clear-cut, depending on the school of therapy in question, and the "style" of the therapist and the life coach. Nevertheless, some of the perceived fundamental differences between life coaching and psychotherapy are outlined here.
Coaching is very much focused on the here and now, with a vision of obtaining clearly defined future goals and aims. In traditional psychotherapy, however, the client's past is sometimes where a large part of the focus and discussion lay. Past events can be discussed in a coaching session, but generally not to such an in-depth degree.
To put it more broadly it can be said that coaching seeks to take the client from where they are now and help move them forward, whereas psychotherapy examines and analyses unresolved emotional issues from all stages of life. In simpler terms, it could be said that life coaching asks the question "what's next?" whereas psychotherapy asks the question "why?"
It has been said that psychotherapy is more about "problem resolution" whereas life coaching is about "life creation". What this simply means is that psychotherapy often seeks to heal certain emotional wounds and remove the client's pain, whereas coaching mainly seeks to equip the client with certain tools, strategies and objectives so that they can realise a certain life vision.
Many life coaches will aim to focus on creating a new life path going forward in order to achieve goals and ambitions, while traditional counselling and psychotherapy sometimes looks into healing and resolving certain issues from the past in order to move forward.
Essentially, Life Coaching and Psychotherapy are two sides of a singular coin. Both aim to support and develop the client in a positive regard. Depending on where the person is at emotionally, and what is happening for them in the here and now, in some cases Counselling & Psychotherapy would be the advised option, while in other cases Life Coaching may be a more beneficial route to take that person forward.

what happens in a coaching session?
We will begin our first session by talking about what your expectations are and what it is that you hope to achieve through coaching. Following this I may attempt to gather some more information from you regarding your current life situation, so as to get a clearer understanding of where you are at in terms of achieving the goal you have set out for yourself. Moving on from this exploratory stage of determining what your hopes, expectations and goals are, we will then start formulating a strategy and plan moving forward.
Through purposeful, and sometimes provocative questioning, I will look to gather a clear picture in terms of your values and motivations. I may also take notes during the session. If you have multiple goals that you would like to discuss, then I will establish which goals you would like to work on first.
I have trained extensively in various models of coaching and therapy, as such I take an integrative approach to my coaching. Some of the more prominent models I use are:
Throughout the coaching process I will provide you with feedback. We will discuss what has worked well thus far, as well as look at areas that may need improving or re-evaluating. Depending on how the coaching process evolves, some sessions may be more discussion-based and open-ended, while in other sessions I may look to incorporate certain specific methods, which may be used as a catalyst in nudging you into a new way of feeling and being.

can life coaching benefit me?
If you have a certain goal or vision for yourself, something that you would like to achieve or work on, and feel there is an incredible new reality awaiting you, then life coaching may be the key for unlocking this potential. You are already equipped with all the tools necessary to succeed, however, sometimes, without the guidance and structure that life coaching can offer, succeeding in our individual pursuits can prove extra challenging. It can appear a daunting prospect to chase after what we inherently know we can achieve. But with the support and guidance of a life coach, and the sense of real direction and momentum that manifests from the coaching space; real and tangible results can be felt almost immediately.

Where can i attend a session?
Coaching sessions are mainly conducted online through video-call. Zoom is the main platform I use, but other video platforms are also available, namely Skype, Whatsapp, and Viber. Please keep in mind too that an online/video platform is not a prerequisite to avail of a session, as a coaching session may also be carried out over the phone. For more details please click here>>
How long does a session last?
Forty-five minutes is the duration of a standard session.
How does key vision coaching differ from other life coaching services?
Although Key Vision Coaching (KVC) began as a general Life Coaching Service, the focus has shifted to Confidence and Resilience Coaching. KVC specializes in these areas, therefore if you feel that a lack of confidence is holding you back, or perhaps feeling overwhelmed by a certain life situation, then KVC might just hold the key for you to overcoming these challenges.
Another thing to bear in mind is that a coaching session with Shayne can offer a somewhat different dynamic due to his extensive experience working in both the psychotherapeutic and addiction fields, complimenting his training and experience working as a life coach: A client may have the best intentions and will in the world in achieving certain ambitions, however, sometimes due to other factors, such as what is happening for them at a sub-conscious or emotional level, the client may still struggle immensely in achieving their ambitions. Owing to the fact that Shayne has worked for many years as a psychotherapist and addiction counsellor before becoming a life and personal-development coach, he is equipped to delve deeper when needs be. This can be highly advantageous to the client during their pursuit of the goals they have set forth for themselves.
It must be noted, however, that a coaching session will remain steadfastly in the paradigm of "life coaching" i.e. the here and now, rather than develop into a more traditional counselling and psychotherapy paradigm.
Shayne also works with a client's value system because it is believed that a client's values, and a deep personal understanding of these values, can play a key role in the ultimate attainment of a client's aims and aspirations. Therefore extensive work is sometimes carried out with the client on their own values, which is something that is not always focused on to any great extent in other life coaching practices.
One further note; a client is always welcome to email Shayne with any queries or issues they may currently be facing between sessions, or even after they have decided to conclude coaching sessions.
